Protocol for Returning to Physical Education Class and Sports Participation

  • This information is relative to a return to participation in physical education classes or sports, following a positive test and positive diagnosis of COVID-19 and is a requirement from our Medical Director Dr. Peter Kowalski.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, our local cardiologists and pediatricians have collaborated to create a COVID-19 Interim Guidance for Return to PE and Sports for children who have tested positive for the COVID-19 infection.

For the safety of every school-aged child, it is now necessary to have an in-person evaluation with the child's private physician after their isolation has been completed (following the positive test).

The Assessment/Return to Play form MUST be completed by your child's private physician at the time of his/her appointment, in order to be cleared to return to physical education class and or participation on a sports team. Your pediatrician can clear your child at that appointment or may refer him/her for more testing and possibly to see a cardiologist.

Assessment - Return to Play Form - click and print the form.

For most students, after the initial clearance, a return to play protocol will begin. It should last at least 7 days. The student must be symptom-free in the stage they are in before advancing to the next stage. It is outlined at the bottom of the Assessment/Return to Play form.

Post infection your child will not be able to participate in PE or sports until the evaluation form has been returned to the school nurse and the return to play protocol has been satisfied.

    • Students 12 years of age and older competing/participating in high intensity (including running) activities will continue gradual return to play.
    • All those under 12 years of age (or those aged 12 in noncompetitive nor high intensity activity) with negative screenings can return to play without the gradual return, after being cleared.

This is a new directive but it will include ALL children who have ever tested positive for COVID-19 and did not receive clearance even if they have been exercising, post infection.
