The 2020-21 basketball season will be one that will go down in history for the Cheektowaga Warriors. The Warriors capped off their season in thrilling fashion Friday night with a 74-70 double overtime victory over CSAT to capture the 2nd sectional championship in school history. The Warriors had to overcome a slow start due in part to 2 quick fouls on senior forward Nevada Eldridge and 3 1st half fouls on senior Keonte Brown. Despite the foul trouble, the Warriors were able to stay within striking distance thanks to junior forward Kydale Staten scoring 13 1st half points and quality bench minutes from senior Jayvon Jenkins and freshman Ro'Mel Speaks. Trailing by as many as 11 points in the 3rd quarter, the Warriors rallied with Eldridge controlling the paint, Brown slashing to the basket and tying the game with under a minute left on a clutch 3-pointer from senior Jesse Hawkins, who scored all of his 12 points after halftime. In the first overtime, the Warriors again needed a big 3 from Hawkins to stay close and found themselves tied at 62 heading into the 2nd overtime. The Warriors found a spark in the 2nd OT and jumped ahead behind an 8-0 run capped by a steal and finish from freshman Jacob Humphrey. Holding off a late run by CSAT, thanks to some free throws by Jenkins and Brown, Eldridge held the ball as the horn sounded and they had secured the sectional title. Eldridge led the Warriors with 20 points and 9 rebounds, Brown and Staten both had 16 points, Hawkins added 12 while Humphrey & Jenkins both chipped in 5. The Warriors finished the season 14-3 and for the first time in school history captured both the division title and sectional title in the same season. Congrats to the boys on a tremendous season that will go down in Warrior history.
