FeedMore WNY Partnership Continues
FeedMore WNY is the partnership of what was the Food Bank and Meals on Wheels. Through FeedMore WNY, the Cheektowaga Central School District has been provided opportunities to partner with them and receive outreach for those in our community who are experiencing food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined by the US Department of Agriculture as households that are uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food, to meet the basic needs of all their members because of insufficient money or other resources.
Some of the programs that our district has benefited from are the Backpack Program and the Fresh Air Farmer’s Market Truck. The Backpack Program at Union East Elementary School provides shelf-sustaining foods that can be easily made by children or families. These meals are provided to help keep children fed over the weekend. During the 2021-22 school year, the Backpack Program is available for pre-k through fourth-grade children. Any child attending Union East Elementary School that is part of a family enrolled in the Backpack Program will be given a bag to take home every Friday.
Our continued partnership with FeedMore WNY allowed us to pilot the Fresh Air Farmer’s Market Truck program over the summer. This program is open to anyone in the community and sells produce, for a reasonable price, from local farmers and gardens. The Fresh Air Farmer's Market Truck accepts cash, debit, credit, and SNAP benefits.
We are working on continuing the Fresh Air Farmer's Market Truck program throughout the school year for our families and community. Visit FeedMore WNY to find more information about mobile food pantries, soup kitchens and food pantries.
